December Saturday NIGHT adventure, Candlelight Christmas, Part 1

Candlelight Christmas up at This is the Place has been on my want-to-do for Christmas advent for years. It always seemed like either someone got sick, or a massive blizzard or something had gotten in the way, but this year NO! And usually we do family movie night for Saturdays in December, but we switched that to Friday since Saturday is realistically the only night we can do it with school, little girls etc. It was SO fun! Here they are in the pioneer wagon inside as we checked in.
I wasn't quite sure what to expect, but I knew we would have several different activities. There was no snow basically on the ground, which is still very weird for this year, This tree was SO fun at the entrance.
The main street was the only things that had activities for the most part. We didn't go up there this summer so it had been awhile since we have been. Here the boys are trying "wassail." They had all kinds of things of the way the pioneers celebrated Christmas right when they got here.
Adeline trying it.
Writing our wishes to Father Christmas.

The pioneers had a tradition (likely from Scandinavian countries) that you rolled up your Christmas wish list and let it burn in the fire and the ashes traveled up to the North Pole to Father Christmas. This was such a fun thing! I loved this idea.

Watching her letter go up to the North Pole.

Instead of the "shaving" parlor (one of our favorites in the summer), they had someone teaching how to work with tin to make ornaments. It was really interesting to watch.

And the bank had SCROOGE! He was giving out gold coins. He was great. That was a fun treat. And they also had a house giving out gingerbread cookies that were huge and YUMMY! They said the pioneers the 7 days before Christmas (another scandinavian tradition) made 7 different Christmas cookies the 7 nights before Christmas. The women gave us several cookie recipes including one called pepper cookies. That was fun, but apparently I didn't get a picture of the gingerbread cookie house.

Here we are at the blacksmith shop. They taught us about the 12 days of Christmas and played a super fun memory game where each person had to add on to the 12 days of Christmas song. I lost :) but it was a really fun activity.
And sometimes I am nice and let us eat out at places on Saturday adventures. In all the times we have gone we have never eaten at the Huntsman Grill. It was not amazing, but fairly fast and everyone LOVED the waffle fries.

Waiting for the carolers to sing in the chapel.
The carolers were GREAT! Super good singers with some fun, unique takes on traditional Christmas songs. This was one of my favorite parts.
